The University of Pittsburgh’s main campus comprises approximately 132 urban acres (0.53 km2) located in Pittsburgh’s historic Oakland neighborhood. Much of the campus, including its centerpiece 42-story Cathedral of Learning, falls within the Oakland Civic Center/Schenley Farms National Historic District.The campus has been noted for its impressive architecture, and contains an eclectic mix of architecture that includes Greek revival, Neogothic, Italian Renaissance, and modern. The University of Pittsburgh’s main campus can be thought to be made up of four contiguous sections: upper (sports complexes, residence halls); mid (Benedum, Chevron, Allen and Thaw Halls); lower (Cathedral of Learning, Union, Posvar Hall); and on the west end of campus, the medical center complex. The campus is generally bordered by Darragh Street/McKee Place to the west and Bellefield Avenue/Dithridge Street to the east; Forbes and Fifth avenues traverse the campus from west to east. Although generally within walking distance, the university also runs a bus and shuttle service between various campus locations and bordering neighborhoods.
The main campus abuts or is within a short walking distance of many recreational, cultural, and educational institutions that also populate the Oakland neighborhood. The campus is directly adjacent to Schenley Plaza, the main branch of the Carnegie Public Library, the Carnegie Museums of Natural History and Art and the Carnegie Music Hall, as well as portions of Carnegie Mellon University. Carlow University is just west of campus, adjacent to the University’s medical center complexes. The main quad of Carnegie Mellon University, Central Catholic High School, and historic Schenley Park, site of the Phipps Conservatory & Botanical Gardens, lie across Junction Hollow on the east end.

More UK Students Choosing Universities in the US

A rising number of students from the UK are choosing to go to US universities.
More than 10,000 students from the UK were at US universities in 2013-14, up by 8% on the previous year, according to annual figures from the Institute of International Education.
These students applied in the autumn of 2012, as tuition fees of £9,000 were introduced in England.
The analysis of overseas students in the US says the UK students were worth $338m (£216m) to the US economy.
But the UK remains a small proportion of the record number of 886,000 international students in the US.
Global students

The overall figures show the growing number of Chinese students in the US higher education system - rising by 17% to more than 274,000.
The figures, gathered by the Institute of International Education and the US State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, show that three Asian countries - China, India and South Korea - account for about a half of all the international students in the US.
There has also been a big increase in students from Saudi Arabia and Iran.
But the biggest group of European students in US universities are now from the UK - the 13th biggest national group and overtaking the number of students from Germany.
There are now 10,191 UK students in the US, rising for the sixth successive year.

Many of the leading US universities cost more than $50,000 (£32,000) per year, much more than students would pay in the UK - although scholarships and financial support might be available.
But there are many more US students heading towards the UK - with the most recent figures showing more than 36,000 in UK universities.
The UK government has been encouraging more students to consider studying abroad. Last week a project was launched to get 25,000 UK students to study in India.
Universities in the US and from European countries such as the Netherlands have been holding recruiting events in the UK.
“As the globe shrinks it is wonderful to see young British students taking advantage of the opportunities to study abroad,” said Penny Egan, executive director of the US-UK Fulbright Commission, which promotes educational exchanges between the two countries.
“Outward mobility is high on the agenda and where better to head to than some of the best universities in the world?”

History of American Samoa

American Samoa consists of several islands in the eastern portion of the Samoan archipeligo. The Samoan islands were first settled by immigrants from the Lau Islands in Fiji, approximately 3,500 years ago.

Contact with Europeans began in the early 18th century, and by the mid 19th century, Great Britain, Germany, and the United States of America, had all established trading posts and were all claiming parts of the islands. The 1899 Treaty of Berlin divided the Samoan islands between Germany, and the United States of America, and U.S. Navy subsequently established a coaling station at Pago Pago Bay.

During World War I, the German part of the islands, was captured by New Zealand and became a New Zealand protectorate. After World War I, a peaceful independence movement, the Mau movement, emerged in both the New Zealand (Western Samoa) and American parts of the islands, but was unsuccessful.

In World War II, American Samoa was an important military base, and U.S. Marines outnumbered the local population, and left a huge cultural influence.

Subsequent to World II, the U.S. Department of Interior sponsored an attempt to incorporate American Samoa into the United States. This attempt was however defeated in Congress, prinicipally due to the efforts of American Samoan chiefs. The chiefs’ efforts eventually led to the creation of local legislature which meets in the village of Fagatogo. Additionally, the Governor of the American Samoa is no longer appointed by the U.S. Navy, but is instead locally elected.

As of today, American Samoa, remains an unorganized unincorporated territory of the United States. Although technically unorganized, American Samoa is self-governing under its constitution which became effective on July 1st 1967.
